Call me a skeptic but I don't believe it. Over 90% of the people I work with tell me this. It's consistent across all types of businesses and all stages of businesses. It doesn't matter whether they're a new business or an old business. They could be profitable or struggling. They almost all say the same thing. This leads me to believe that some people are living in fantasyland when it comes to their marketing. This can be a dangerous place to live when you're trying to build a successful business. I think the reason I hear this so much is because it's what people want to believe. We all want to think our service or reputation or product is so great that people will line up at our door. It's the old "if you build it they will come" idea. But it's not true. In most businesses, no matter how great you "build it" they will not come. At least they won't come to you until they know about you. That's where effective marketing comes in. Sure, word of mouth is a desirable way to get new customers. But too many business owners forget that word of mouth doesn't just appear out of thin air. You have to create it. And there are just two ways to create it. 1. You use marketing tools to tell people who you are and what you do.
2. You deliver a "wow" experience for your customers so they tell others. A good marketing campaign will create word of mouth. In fact, most word of mouth is created or amplified by effective marketing. (When I say "marketing" I mean anything you do to get the word out. It could be advertising, public relations, special events, salespeople, direct mail, etc.) Some companies are so good they deliver "wow" experiences to their customers. This produces great word of mouth marketing for them. And they deserve it because "wow" does not happen very often. It certainly does not happen in 90% of the businesses. A big mistake people make is to separate their marketing tools and treat them like they're completely independent. They think word of mouth marketing happens independently of other marketing. It tells customers who you are, what you do, and more than a little about how you do it. Your name differentiates you from your peers, peaks customer interest, and invites further investigation -- if you do it right. I didnt do it right. At least, not at first. All entrepreneurs make mistakes, and I made one of my first ones right off the bat. Thrilled with the fledgling business I was starting, this precious enterprise so near and dear to my heart, I christened my company Diadem Communications. Diadem means crown-- a fitting name for what I felt was a
crowning achievement. What does Diadem say to you? The doctor listened to the couple talk about their relationship, and then he said, "The treatment I prescribe is really quite simple." With that, he went over to the man's wife, gathered her up in his arms, and gave her a big kiss. He then stepped back and looked at the woman's glowing face and broad smile. Turning to the woman's husband, he said, "See! That's all she needs to put new life back into her." Expressionless, the husband said, "If you say so, Doc, I can bring her in on Tuesdays and Thursdays." Okay, thats not how to treat depression, but I have a few other suggestions that make more sense. As a result of trial and error, over the course of thirty years, Ive found ten blues battling strategies that often help me. These are not quick fixes, and this list is not exhaustive. It is also not a "must do" list. When youre depressed, the last thing you need is a list of expectations to live up to. Dont stress about forcing yourself to accomplish all these things. Theyre not items to be checked off a list each day. The only one that is crucial is number one. After that, you can experiment with the others as you feel able to. 1) Get the Facts and Get Help. Web sites and books on depression abound. Find them and do some research. You need to know what youre dealing with. Learn all you can about depression, so you can make educated decisions about your own health, learn how others cope, and find what medical treatment is available. Many books have self tests to help you determine whether you are experiencing clinical depression or temporary sadness in reaction to an event. In addition to reading everything you can get your hands on, one of the most important things you can do for yourself is seek medical help right away. Depression is much too complicated for you to solve on your own. Clinical depression is a serious medical condition that is very complicated to treat. Often it is a physical problem that requires long term medication. In my own experience, it's taken years of medication, counseling, and practicing various self help methods to slowly emerge from it, and it's still a daily battle. Many people suffer needlessly from depression because they wont consult a doctor. If youre waiting for God to heal you, consider this: God gives scientists intelligence, which they often use to create helpful medicines; and He gives doctors wisdom to treat illnesses. Wise doctors and modern medicines are gifts from God and vehicles through which He often heals. Doctors can help you determine whether what you feel is truly depression, or if you are just reacting normally to a sad life situation. If youve experienced depression, you already know it is not an illness you can "snap out of," no matter what others may tell you. Its not something to be ashamed of either. Depression can be a serious physical illness caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals or other factors. Like any serious medical condition, depression needs to be treated. Without the proper treatment, none of my suggested coping strategies will do any good. 2) Get Focused. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness pervade the life of a depressed person. The opposite of depression is a hopeful attitude. Focusing on hope and developing a hopeful heart is a must. One way to focus on hope is by practicing positive self talk. This simply means telling yourself good things. I made a list for myself of positive affirmations like "God cares and understands my pain. God values me. God is giving me strength. I can choose my attitude. I choose not to put myself down. Im a worthwhile person. I have a purpose. I enjoy life. I choose to be happy and I am competent." If you struggle with depression, I think youll find it helpful to write down as many of these affirmations as you can think of and read them every day. Even if theyre not currently true or you dont really believe them, its okay. Say them to yourself anyway. Your mind will come to believe what you tell it, so tell it you are already the type of person you want to become. 3) Get Friendly. Fellowship with other people is a mood lifter. Being alone is the worst thing you can do when youre depressed. Unfortunately, its usually the very thing I want most. Depression grows best in isolation. I find it very difficult to get out and socialize when Im depressed, but if I push myself to do it, Im almost always glad later. Some ideas for socializing include joining a club, taking a class, inviting someone to meet you for lunch, or visiting a nursing home to chat with the residents there. It especially helps me to be with friends who enjoy the same hobbies I do. Shopping, watching movies, and rubber stamping are some of the things I enjoy doing alone, but theyre twice as much fun when I do them with friends. 4) Get Giggling. I collect cartoons and funny newspaper columns. I visit humor web sites online, watch funny movies, and read funny books. Best of all is laughing with friends. One of the reasons I enjoy my grandson so much is because he makes me laugh. I can act goofy with him and let go of my inhibitions. We dance and sing and make up silly rhymes. I have photographs of us wearing funny glasses with big black mustaches. I laugh every time I look at those. Laughing affects brain chemicals. It releases endorphins, which make you feel good. Chocolate does the same thing, but a good laugh is less fattening. A friend of mine, who had a very frustrating job, told me that one day she was inspired by someone who had a huge, bright smile. She decided to emulate that woman and smile at everyone she encountered. Right away, she realized that smiling was addictive. It seemed to make the time pass more quickly and she found herself less frustrated and more at peace. She told me, "It sounds corny, but it really works!" 5) Get Rhythm. When I feel a case of the gloomies descending, that is not the time to play melancholy music. Positive upbeat tunes are in order -- the sort of music you might hear at a parade or a circus. Music gets your toes tapping and your blood flowing. It makes you want to sing. Singing and dancing sends a message to your brain that youre happy. Your brain is an actualizer. Whatever it "thinks" is true, it works to bring about. This is why positive thinking works. You tell yourself, "Im happy" often enough and your brain accepts it as fact. It actualizes that truth, making it happen. Ive found that when depression takes hold of me, I tend to ruminate on negative thoughts. Listening to good music with positive lyrics helps to pour good things into my brain and crowd those negative things out. 6) Get Busy We all need to feel like were involved in something significant. We need to participate in something outside ourselves. You might consider volunteering at a local womens shelter or food pantry. Ive enjoyed both and discovered that when I stay busy helping others and concentrating on their problems, I get a break from focusing on my own troubles. Ive learned that joy boomerangs. When you give it away, it comes back to you. Helping others gives you the heart-warming satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference in the world. That will elevate your mood as well as your self esteem. 7) Get Physical This is two-fold. Physical exercise is good for us, but physical contact is equally important. Our bodies need to move to be healthy, and going for a walk is the easiest exercise for me to do when Im depressed. It doesnt require as much energy and motivation as other activities. Breathing the fresh air and looking at the beauty of nature can be helpful, and taking my dog along is even better. Just watching his ears flop as he bounces down the road in front of me often brings a smile to my face. Exercise affects brain chemicals, and the healing touch of physical closeness does too. If youre depressed, hug somebody - anybody, everybody! A hug is good medicine. It reduces stress and tension and it boosts your immunity to illness. Hugs raise self esteem and lower blood pressure. They feel good and make people happy. And theyre free! Hugs are the universal language that communicates love and acceptance. Theyre healthy for the "hugger" as well as the "hugee." 8) Get Quiet Too much solitude can worsen depression. Isolating yourself and avoiding people can make depression grow. Meditation can be a good thing, but don't let it become an excuse to avoid human contact. Balance between quiet time alone and time spent with others is essential. 9) Get Forgiveness And Give it Too! Ive read that many psychiatrists agree that depression is guilt or anger turned inward. Depression can sometimes be caused from the need to forgive someone else or yourself (whomever is making you angry). Grudges cause feelings of frustration, which aggravate the hopeless feelings of depression. When we forgive, we let go of past hurts and give up bitterness. Then depression has no negativity on which to feed. If you free yourself from feelings of hate and open yourself up to feelings of love, you may feel as if the depression is physically lifting off your shoulders. My friend Nance went through a difficult divorce, which left her bitter about the past, anxious about the future, and miserable in general. She harbored a lot of grudges and guilt, and she worried constantly. She felt the need to control everything in her life, yet she knew she couldnt. After attending a womens retreat, Nance realized what her negativity was doing to her.She released her worries, fears, anger, and resentments at the foot of the cross. Then she felt a renewal in her heart. She was happy and at peace. When she was dying, Nance told me that the most difficult thing shed ever had to do was forgive both her ex-husband and herself -- for past mistakes. She said forgiving was even harder than dying! It may seem like theres no light at the end of the tunnel, but trust that there is; and be thankful for that, as you wait for the light to appear. So, while kisses from your husband (or a psychiatrist) may be great, they cant cure depression. But along with medication and the proper treatment, now you have some practical steps you can take for your own well being. There are times when one of these strategies may be more helpful than the rest. Other times, it may seem that none of them makes a huge difference. But I keep practicing all of them anyway, because I know they are steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Following them on a regular basis may not eliminate depression forever, but they help me to minimize their severity. These tips can be helpful for people who are not depressed too. They can be useful for anyone who is a little discouraged, a little blue, or needs to refocus on more positive things in life. I hope that by trying these ideas you may find yourself on the way to experiencing more joy. This interoperability event has been organized by the MPLS & Frame Relay Alliance and the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC), and hosted by Upperside. The interoperability test scenarios were performed using a multi-vendor network of real MPLS routers, complemented by emulators. Test methodologies were checked and improved throughout the testing. The end result was that the network was successfully constructed. Multi-vendor MPLS/BGP VPNs and Layer 2 Ethernet VPNs (Martini and VPLS) were configured to prove that services were traffic engineering-enabled and could process differentiated services. To ensure the success of the event, a one week hotstaging event with all the participating vendors was conducted before the MPLS World Congress. Something Toxic on the Ceiling

By Liz Ryan I got a phone call from a magazine writer who was working on a story. Turns out that Stanford University put out a research study looking at what barriers exist for women in the corporate world. They talked to something like 1,000 of their MBA grads - not new grads, but people who went through Stanford over many years - and asked them what was keeping women out of the top ranks of corporations. Here's what they reported: There is no glass ceiling. Women themselves are opting out of the top jobs, for lifestyle reasons or because they don't want the pressure. So, asked the writer, "What do you think about that?" Have you ever heard a person sputter on the phone? That's what I did. I couldn't find words for a moment. "Bleeping brilliant!" I said. "That is magnificent - there is no glass ceiling, it's we ourselves who are opting out of senior leadership roles because, you know, there's so much pressure. That's perfect, because companies who accept that wisdom can dismantle their mentoring programs, save the money that they might be spending on their high-potential women, and stop wringing their hands when women in senior roles bail at the next-to-highest rung of the ladder." He laughed, either in sympathy or amusement at my apoplexy, or both. Now mind you, I haven't seen the study, so I'm one degree removed from the conclusions (much less the data), but here's my take on the notion that women opt out of senior leadership spots rather than being kept out of them by their leaders: Yes - we do. We leave. Because of the pressure? Oh, give me a break. Not because of the pressure - because of BS level that comes with the territory. Think about senior-level roles in corporations these days. I don't think that there are more politics in actual politics than there are in major corporations. It's a tough way to live - watching your back, attending to your alliances, spouting the party line and fighting your battles behind the scenes. Generally I stay away from sweeping generalizations about one gender or the other. But I feel comfortable saying this: women have a lower threshold for idiotic, posturing, political, inauthentic behavior, day in and day out. Women have a cognitive dissonance alarm that gets louder and louder day by day so that they finally conclude, "This isn't me. I can't keep doing this. I can't keep my mouth shut, go along, and play the good soldier for one more day, much less another fifteen years until retirement." And that's just it - they're done. They blow the whistle, like Sherron Watkins did at Enron, or they just take off. Can't take the pressure? Are you kidding me? Women who make it to the next-to-the-top rung of the ladder, the ones who are even in the position to decide between sticking it out and leaving, have already taken more pressure than most guys can even comprehend. They've smiled at enough gratuitous comments - walked the tightrope between telling the truth and drinking the company Kool-Aid - and slashed their way through enough uncharted territory to write a best-selling novel, or two. The most senior women I know are uniformly tough, articulate, smart, and incredibly flexible - they wouldn't have survived the last twenty years of corporate life any other way. So why do they leave? Because they look at that top spot and say, It's not worth it. There is nothing there that I need, and the cost - to myself, to my family, to my relationships - is too high. It's not the blasted pressure! It's the internal compass that says, Enough. Can women run corporations successfully? Of course they can. But so many corporations don't hold enough promise, enough room to mature, to evolve, to be the sorts of places that successful women want to run, that the grass is simply greener in too many other places. At home, with kids or horses or whatever stirs you. In a startup venture, writing a novel, or starting a foundation for Somalian children. The need to be in control doesn't always overcome the need to do something important and useful, plus the need to be herself, and so the women depart. Wimps! If I were a CEO looking at this study, I would say, This is wrong. If women truly are leaving corporations at the point of the pyramid just below the tip, that's a waste. We hired them, we trained them and entrusted big chunks of the business to them, and now we've lost them, so something is clearly amiss. Aren't our customers women? Aren't our shareholders women, and don't we believe, on the evidence and in our guts, that women should help to run this organization? So what is happening internally here that is turning them off, and how do we fix it? That's the takeaway I'd love to see from this study. Let's not conclude, There's no glass ceiling, so if women are leaving our organizations, what can we do about it? Oh well - better get back to work. Let's say instead, If the barrier isn't made of glass, but rather some toxic chemical that women won't expose themselves to, let's get rid of it and clean up our act. When you speak and write correctly, people make the assumption that you are intelligent, educated and capable, and they will concentrate on what you have to say, on your ideas, not on the incorrect or unclear way that you try to express yourself. Even in the modern context of bullet lists and sound bytes, the sentence is still the standard way to express a complete thought. Many people actually think in sentences. The first step to understanding sentence structure is being able to identify the parts of a sentence. Every sentence must have a subject, which is usually a noun or pronoun, and a verb, which is a word that expresses an action, such as runs, or a state of being, such as exists. Most sentences will also have words that describe the subject or the verb in more specific terms. These descriptive words, or modifiers, are usually adjectives, which describe nouns and pronouns, and adverbs, which describe verbs. Adverbs often end in ly, as in ran quickly. Also, it helps to understand some of the subtleties, like the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs, and what makes a word an irregular verb. Concentrate on the benefits you receive from having a better understanding of basic grammar. With that said, be aware that the common verb, which denotes action, comes in more than one flavor. For example, a transitive verb has a direct object, as in ran the race. An intransitive verb does not. Many verbs can be used both transitively and intransitively, as in the difference between the boy ran, and the boy ran the race. In the first case, since there is no object for the verb, ran is used intransitively. In the second, race is the direct object, so ran is transitive. And an irregular verb is a word whose past tense is not formed by the regular rules of adding E-D. For example, the past tense of the word live is lived, but the past tense of give is gave. Give is an irregular verb. Other areas of consideration in understanding sentence structure are the uses of prepositional phrases as adjectives and adverbs, agreement in number between subject and verb, as in the men are as opposed to one of the men is, the proper use of pronouns, and correct punctuation. Correct punctuation is an issue for many people and essential for creating clear business communications. The rules of usage are confusing at times. People are often unsure of correct punctuation while they are writing, but can usually recognize incorrect punctuation when they are reading. Therefore, it makes good sense to understand the correct usage for the common punctuation marks: the period, the comma, the question mark, the exclamation point, quotation marks, apostrophes, colons and semi-colons. Correct capitalization is also included under the heading of Punctuation. As I've stated, much of this material is basic, but it applies as your sentence structure becomes more complex. Complex sentences can contain several phrases or clauses, and punctuating them correctly is the key to making them understandable to your reader. If you leave your reader hanging by using sentence fragments, they will feel confused, and be forced to reread what youve written to try and understand it. If the subject of your writing is at all complex, you will lose your audience entirely by confusing them with bad grammar. Therefore, check and recheck your draft for sentence fragments, run on sentences and misplaced phrases and clauses. There are clever short cuts available to you. Many professionals who create written communications on a regular basis keep some resources handy. A copy of Strunk & Whites Elements of Style is a good addition to any writers desk. Elements of Style is a single volume reference to correct grammar and usage. It is set up as a reference book, so it is easy to use. There are also many sites on the Internet that furnish comprehensive usage information. Practice and study of basic grammar helps implant regular good usage in both written and spoken communications.
