How Fake Tanning Can Make You Look Like a Sun-Goddess

By Angie Leighsmith Ive always wanted that golden brown, Hollywood tan. Unfortunately, Im pretty pale and my skin resembles a fresh coat of snow. A tan for me is more akin to a shade of light pink scattered with a few freckles. I guess it could be worse. I have a cousin who looks like she gets tan but is in fact one big freckle come summer time. Getting back to my dilemma, Ive tried sun blocks with the highest SPF on the market. I even tried one that was black market but we wont discuss that. Im still convinced it was more than coincidence I grew that third nipple around the same time! Tanning booths are no help either. I get the same results from a tanning bed as I do the sun and my wallet pays the price. Recently, I tried a spray on tan as a solution to my problem, and I have great news for those pale girls out in the world like myself. Theres hope for us, yet! I did my homework and studied up the pros and cons along with the dos and donts of a fake tan and it all pointed to a positive in my favor. I put together this little list for anyone interested in a fake tan treatment. They are as follows:
Salon tans are your best bet If youre looking for a flawless, professional application and can afford the price, go to a spa or salon. If you can afford to spend the extra cash, you can get one of many options such as a full body exfoliation and professional application of self-tanner, airbrush bronzing or the least expensive option: spray tanning. You can step into a booth and get sprayed on all sides for about $20 a session or more. How to use self-tanner on your face It isnt as easy as it sounds and is a four-step process. 1. Prep the skin by gently cleansing & exfoliating. Skip moisturizing. It will interfere with the tanner. 2. Blend a few drops of self-tanner and equal parts moisturizer in the palm of your hand and then apply it over your face and neck. 3. Let the color of the tanner develop for about three hours then follow up with a sweep of bronzer on forehead, cheeks and nose. 4. Smooth out the remaining tanner over your earlobes and upper ears. Dont forget to wash hands thoroughly and never skip the sunscreen. How to self-tan your body 1. Start by exfoliating the skin with a body scrub while you shower, try to pay special attention to rough areas including knees and elbows. 2. Apply the tanner limb by limb, starting with your legs. Youll want to apply over the shin and calf of a leg next, sweeping tanner down over your ankle, foot and toes. Then apply the tanner to your thigh from front to back, using the excess to cover your knee. Repeat on your other leg when finished. 3. For the last step, apply tanner to your hips, stomach & torso, followed with your shoulders and arms. Wait around ten minutes to dry before dressing. If you end up with a streaky tan or you messed up on a few spots, dont fret. You can fix that goof with an astringent toner or even toothpaste. Exfoliate to even out the patchy application. If you dont think the tan came out dark enough. Try repeating the procedure and just make sure you give the tan enough time to develop. Angie is a recent college graduate in communications.
